18th Inuit Studies Conference, Smithsonian Institution National Museum of Natural History (NMNH), Washington D.C., October 24-28th 2012

Alex will be working on the photo-documentation, documentation, and digitization of the 18th Inuit Studies Conference hosted by the Smithsonian Institution National Museum of Natural History (NMNH) in Washington D.C. The conference focuses on Inuit culture and issues throughout the world. Alex’s work on the documentation and digitization of the event will be used to create a new virtual exhibition produced by the Smithsonian Institution that will extend the 18th Inuit Studies Conference to a wider audience. Alex will also be working on the photo-documentation and digitization of several sessions for the Inuvialuit Living History website, including Celebrating Inuvialuit Cultural Heritage and the screening of the documentary, “A Case of Access,” which documents the project team’s original trip to the Smithsonian to view the MacFarlane Collection back in 2009. Alex’s work for the project has included photo-documentation of the MacFarlane collection ethnography and natural history for the Inuvialuit Living History website.

Inuvialuit Living History 

Alex has contributed and worked on photographs for the Inuvialuit Living History project. The project is a community-based research project that involves the online exhibition and digitization of the Smithsonian Institution National Museum of Natural History (NMNH) MacFarlane Collection. The project website has just been launched and there is a conference presentation concerning the project at this year’s Museums and the Web 2012 Conference in San Diego, CA, from April 11-14, 2012. Archaeologists | Photographers

Alex is currently featured on Archaeologists | Photographers, which is a collaborative peer-reviewed project with Guy Hunt (L-P Archaeology) and Colleen Morgan (UC Berkeley), who, along with Alex, were both in the TAG 2011 session and exhibition, Opening Dialogs in Archaeological Photography, at UC Berkeley. The project is primarily focused on new trends and issues related to photography and digital media in archaeology. Expect many of Alex’s new photographs and projects to be added soon.

American Anthropological Association (AAA) 110th Annual Meeting
Montreal Quebec, November 16-20, 2011 and Contemporary and Historical Archaeology in Theory (CHAT) Conference, November 11-13, 2011

Alex’s paper reading, presentation, and exhibition for the American Anthropological Association (AAA) 110th Annual Meeting in Montreal, Quebec are now available in-part on Flickr. Alex mounted a paper reading, presentation, and exhibition that explored the future roles of photography and digital media in archaeology. The paper consisted of a presentation and exhibition that looked at specific examples from fieldwork. Alex also presented at the Contemporary and Historical Archaeology in Theory (CHAT) Conference, which took place from November 11-13, 2011 at Boston University. During this presentation, his work included a paper and a projected exhibition of photographs.

American Anthropological Association (AAA) 110th Annual Meeting Montreal, Quebec, November 16-20, 2011

Alex will be presenting his work at the American Anthropological Association (AAA) 110th Annual Meeting to be held from November 16-20, 2011 in Montreal, Quebec. Alex’s presentation and talk will touch upon examples from a number of his photographic projects and the ways in which such projects relate to new developments and trends in the use of new media and photography in archaeology and anthropology. Contemporary and Historical Archaeology in Theory (CHAT) Conference Boston University, November 11-13, 2011

Alex will be presenting his work at this year’s Contemporary and Historical Archaeology in Theory (CHAT) Conference which will take place from November 11-13, 2011 at Boston University. CHAT is held each year to focus on issues in  contemporary and historical archaeological theory and will take place this year for the first time in the U.S. Alex’s presentation will focus on the new and future roles of photography in archaeology and will focus on examples from his work. Theoretical Archaeology Group (TAG) Annual Meeting
UC Berkeley, May 6-8, 2011

Alex will be presenting his work at the Theoretical Archaeology Group (TAG) annual meeting which will take place at UC Berkeley from May 6-8, 2011. The meeting is held each year to explore trends and issues in archaeological theory.

Alex will be presenting and exhibiting as part of the session entitled, Opening Dialogs in Archaeological Photography, which will showcase a diversity of perspectives in archaeological photography. The session will examine the past and future roles of photography in archaeology.

Alex’s exhibition will focus on new ways in which photographs can represent archaeological space. The exhibit will include a presentation on his work.

Other archaeologists in the session include Heather Law (UC Berkeley),
Colleen Morgan (UC Berkeley; Middle Savagery), and Ruth Tringham (UC Berkeley), among others.

TAG Berkeley is sponsored by the Archaeological Research Facility at UC Berkeley.
